The Global Health Body Sounds Concern Over Critical Lack of Obesity Medications

Fewer than one in 10 people who could benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy can access them, states the WHO as it issues its first guidance on the medications.

With more than one billion people worldwide now living with obesity, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer access to GLP-1 medication.

Based on estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidance affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be treated with thorough and continuous treatment," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major obstacles to broad availability to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing significant body mass, explains the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Even in the present most optimistic outlook, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies might only reach about 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, per the WHO.

The advice encourages governments and firms to expand access, by measures like licensing agreements.

How Obesity Jabs Function

These medications mimick a body's own hormone to slow digestion, reduce hunger and increase satiety so people reduce food intake.

Patients commonly see weight reduction after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Research indicates users may put most of the weight back on a year later of discontinuing the drug, because their normal food cravings return.

Being overweight or obese increases your chance for developing health problems, such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific cancers.

Obesity affects individuals in all nations and was associated with over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
