This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government. A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties. "Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed. The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics. Details of the New Electoral Partnership According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved. Wider Government Discussions Taking Place In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests. After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
